Buying a Second-Hand Bike This Navratri? The 15-Minute Garage Check
Navratri starts tomorrow, 11 October. For many families it is the time to bring a bike home, and for many that bike is second-hand.
So the call comes to the garage: “Bhai, ek purani bike dekhi hai. Ek baar chalke dekh loge?”
Most mechanics say yes, look for five minutes, and charge nothing. Here is how to make it a proper 15-minute check, with a written report, that the buyer is happy to pay for.
Why this is good business
- The buyer avoids a bad bike. He remembers who saved him.
- If he buys it, the first service and repairs usually come to you.
- A fixed, written check looks professional. Write the fee on your board, so nobody bargains.
The 15-minute check
1. Papers and numbers (2 minutes)
- Match the chassis number and engine number on the bike with the RC.
- Look at the insurance and PUC dates.
- Note the odometer reading.
You are only checking that the numbers match. Legal checks on ownership stay with the buyer.
2. Cold start (2 minutes)
Ask the seller not to start the bike before you arrive. A warm engine hides problems.
- Does the self-start crank strongly, or slowly?
- Any knocking, rattling or heavy smoke on start?
- Does it idle evenly after a minute?
3. Battery and electricals (3 minutes)
This is where buyers lose money without knowing.
- Take the resting voltage with a multimeter. About 12.6 V is typical for a charged 12 V battery.
- Look at the terminals for white powder, loose cables or cut wires.
- Ask for the battery bill or warranty card. If there is none, treat the battery’s age as unknown.
- Take the charging voltage at about 3,000 to 4,000 rpm. See our charging system test.
- Check the headlamp, indicators, brake light, horn and meter.
- Look for extra accessories and taped wiring. They can cause a battery drain.
4. Engine and drive (3 minutes)
- Oil leaks around the engine and the oil level and colour.
- Chain slack and sprocket teeth. Hooked teeth mean a chain set is due.
- Clutch: does it slip when you open the throttle in gear?
5. Brakes, tyres and frame (3 minutes)
- Brake feel, front and rear. Check pads or shoes where you can see them.
- Tyre tread and cracks. Our monsoon tyre guide explains what to look for.
- Front fork: oil marks on the fork tubes, or a soft, bouncy front.
- Frame: weld marks, bent handle or fresh paint in odd spots can mean an accident.
6. Short test ride (2 minutes)
Does it run straight with light hands on the handle? Any vibration, noise from the gearbox or pulling to one side under braking?
Give the buyer a written report
Send one WhatsApp message with photos and a simple result for each area:
| Area | Result | Cost to fix soon |
|---|---|---|
| Papers and numbers | OK / Mismatch | – |
| Engine | OK / Watch / Problem | – |
| Battery and charging | OK / Weak / Replace | – |
| Electricals | OK / Problem | – |
| Brakes and tyres | OK / Due | – |
| Frame and suspension | OK / Doubtful | – |
An honest “cost to fix soon” column is the most useful thing you give him. It helps him decide the price with the seller.
Be honest about the battery
If the battery is weak or its age is unknown, tell the buyer to plan for a new one. Don’t scare him, and don’t push a sale. Give him the reading and let him decide.
“Bike theek hai, lekin battery 12.1 volt par hai aur bill nahi hai. Kharidna ho to battery ka kharcha bhi soch lo.”
Frequently asked questions
Can a mechanic check a used bike in 15 minutes?
A basic check, yes. A full engine inspection takes longer, so say clearly what you checked.
Why should the engine be cold?
A warm engine starts easily and can hide starting and smoke problems.
What if the chassis number doesn’t match the RC?
Tell the buyer to stop and verify the papers before paying anything.
Should a used bike always get a new battery?
No. Test it first. Replace it only if the reading and the test say so.
