Going Home for Diwali? Park the Bike So It Starts When You Return
In Surat and many cities, Diwali means a long break. Families leave for their native place, and the bike stays parked in the society for one, two or three weeks.
Then comes Labh Pancham on 14 November. Everyone returns, turns the key, and the garage phone starts ringing: “Bike start nahi ho rahi.”
Ten minutes of care before leaving can avoid that call. Share this with your customers today.
Before you leave: the 10-minute routine
Battery
- Parked for two weeks or more? Remove the negative (–) cable from the battery. It stops any small drain from the clock, alarm or accessories.
- Tuck the cable away so it can’t touch the terminal by itself.
- If the bike has an alarm or GPS tracker, remember it will be off. Plan for security another way.
- Bikes that go flat even in a few days off may have a leak. Read our key-off current test post.
Fuel and engine
- Fill the tank close to full. A full tank leaves less room for moist air inside.
- Don’t start the bike for one minute every few days. Short idling uses battery power and does not charge it back.
Tyres and parking
- Check tyre pressure before you leave.
- Park on the main stand if the bike has one, in shade, on dry ground.
- Use a breathable cover. Don’t cover a hot engine straight after a ride.
Security
- Lock the handle and use a disc lock or chain if you have one.
- Keep the keys and papers in one safe place, or carry them with you.
When you return: before the first ride
- Remove the cover and look around for leaks, rat damage to wires, or a flat tyre.
- Reconnect the negative cable and tighten it properly.
- Check the tyre pressure.
- Turn the key and check the lights, horn and indicators.
- Press the self-start in short tries of about 5 seconds, not one long crank.
- If it cranks slowly, stop. Get the battery tested instead of draining it fully.
- Ride gently for the first few minutes and test the brakes early.
For garages: send this before the break
One WhatsApp message to your customers now saves many calls later. A sample:
“Diwali vacation par ja rahe hain? Do hafte se zyada bike khadi rahegi to battery ka negative cable nikal dijiye, tank full karke shade mein park kijiye. Wapas aakar bike start na ho to ek call kijiye. Labh Pancham se garage chalu. Shubh Deepavali!”
You can also offer a short “after-vacation check” from Labh Pancham: battery voltage, terminals, tyres and brakes.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to remove the battery from the bike?
For two to three weeks, removing the negative cable is usually enough. For longer storage, remove the battery and keep it charged with a proper charger.
Will disconnecting the battery reset anything?
On some bikes the clock or trip meter may reset. That is normal.
Is it OK to start the bike once in a while?
Only if you ride it long enough to charge the battery. A minute of idling does more harm than good.
What if the bike won’t start when I return?
Don’t keep cranking. Get the battery tested and charged at your garage.
